Student Rights to Privacy (FERPA)

Welcome to the Records Privacy section of the Registrar's Office of the University of Central Florida

This site will introduce you to the very important "Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as Amended," known generally as "FERPA" or "The Buckley Amendment." FERPA is the United States federal law that protects student records privacy review and disclosure rights. The law guarantees these rights for both current and former UCF students. To help you understand FERPA and what it means to you, this site addresses a variety of records privacy questions. The linked pages will outline student rights under FERPA to review educational records and to assert some control over their release to third party requests.

What are some of the basic guidelines?

As a student, your educational records are considered confidential. Under most circumstances your records will not be released without your written and signed consent.

As a UCF faculty or staff member you have a responsibility to protect and keep confidential educational records in your possession.

Directory Information

Some information, called "Directory Information", may be released to 3rd parties without the student's prior consent, unless the student files a written request to restrict directory information access. At UCF "directory information" is the student's

• name
• current mailing address
• telephone number
• date of birth
• major field of study
• dates of attendance
• enrollment status
• degrees and awards received
• participation in officially registered activities and sports
• athletes’ height and weight
